357 – The Rip

One of the most watched films ever on Netflix is the recent Joe Carnahan directed action-thriller, The Rip. Key members of the sound team sat down with me at Formosa Hollywood to walk me down the path of the unique challenges this film presented them. From endless dog barking on set, to gun shots sounds that are huge, to a fun scene where they got to use ATMOS in a really special way. Supervising Sound Editor and Re-Recording Mixer Craig Mann is joined by Daniel Pagan (Supervising Sound Editor), Laura Wiest (Re-Recording Mixer) and Chase Keehn (Dial/ADR Supervisor) for this interesting deep dive into The Rip.

(L-R) Chase Keehn (Dial/ADR Supervisor), Timothy Muirhead (Tonebenders’ Host), Daniel Pagan (Supervising Sound Editor), Laura Wiest (Re-Recording Mixer) and Craig Mann (Supervising Sound Editor & Re-Recording Mixer)

Sound Ideas had a great time at NAB this year, connecting with professionals across media, post-production, and broadcast. They launched a limited-time NAB Sale around the event, offering 50% off their catalog of professional sound effects libraries. This sale is available to everyone, whether you made it to NAB or not. Due to strong interest, that sale has now been extended for a limited time. So even though NAB has wrapped, there’s still a chance to take advantage of the savings – but not for long. You can check out the extended sale at sound-ideas.com

If you are interested in field recording, you should know about the O-Mini P48 and the brand new O-Mini PIP miniature omni-directional electret microphones. Each one is hand made by Chris Trevino, a practicing field recordist, and a really engaged member of the sound community.  He puts a lot of work into making and testing each mic to ensure they live up to his high standards.  They are ultra-sonic capable, which makes manipulating your recordings with them a lot of fun.  They are also extremely affordable.  At $150us for the P48 & $130 for the PIP, they offer a lot of value for a stereo matched pair.
