COVID and the Sound Community

Colin Heart recording alligators.

Below is a list of companies and organizations that are doing good things to help during the COVID lockdowns. If you know of any other actions people are taking that we can add to this list, please tell us. As we all know the greater community of #gameaudio, #filmsound, #fieldrecording and #sounddesign is a great group to be a part of. Lots of our own are going to be out of work or forced to work in non-ideal conditions. Lets all rally around each other and offer support for each other. Stay positive out there folks….

  • The Audio Engineering Society (AES) is offering a special 3 month membership, for $25, so you can use your new found downtime to educate yourself with their many community resources (E-Library, Journals, Videos)
  • Rode Microphones is donating mics and Rodecaster Pros to New South Wales schools closed for COVID 19. This will let teachers record the lessons for students.
  • In a bid to spread “positivity, creativity and expressivity” in these difficult times, Moog Music has announced that it’s giving away its Minimoog Model D iOS app for free. An official emulation of the most famous synthesizer of all time, this runs on both iPhone and iPad, and usually costs $14.99/£14.99.
  • If you’re looking for some good news in these rather anxious and fearful times, allow us to point you in the direction of Korg, which has decided to give away its none-too-shabby iKaossilator ‘dynamic phrase synth’ for free on both iOS and – hallelujah – Android.
  • From Avid: As an added measure to assist our community in adjusting their workflows to accommodate COVID-19 virus precautions, Avid will be providing temporary licenses of our creative tools to customers at no charge. Starting Monday, March 16 through Friday, April 17 for those users who are unable to access their systems at their facilities and thus must work from home, we will provide 90-day licenses for Media Composer | Ultimate, Pro Tools, Pro Tools | Ultimate, or Sibelius | Ultimate. In addition, any student of an institution that uses our products who is unable to attend school and can no longer access school facilities can receive a 90-day license of the same products. Avid will make details available soon.
  • Kraken Dialog Toolkit is offering free second activations to anyone who already owns a license, so they can work from home without hassle.
  • If need to work from home here is a link to a temporary license for Reaper from Cockos. http://cockos.com/reaper/reaper_2020_temporary_license.txt
  • The fine folks at ASoundEffect have put together an Audio Community Power Pack to hopefully make the coming days and weeks a bit easier. Includes some free sounds, reading material and a trial license of Soundly. https://www.asoundeffect.com/audio-community-power-pack/?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=facebook
