Tonebenders has had a pretty good year in 2018. We were able to get out 16 episodes of the podcast and talk with some really great people about their recent work in sound. It is always so great to be able to sit down with them and find out how warm and open all these people were. We are really lucky to have such a giving group of people in the sound community.
In case you missed them over the last 12 months here are the top five most listened to episodes from 2018.
075 – Dialog Editing Roundtable Discussion
We are really proud of this episode, it took a lot of planning and effort to get these people all together for this super interesting talk. There is really nothing quite like it out there. Not only was it our most listened to episode in 2018 it is in our top 3 all time. If you missed this one do yourself a favour and listen to it ASAP.
083 – Sound of Arrival w/ Sylvain Bellemare & Bernard GariĆ©py Strobl
Tonebenders hit the road and traveled to Montreal to interview the sound team behind Denis Villeneuve’s Arrival. The interview was conducted on the stage where the film was mixed and Bernard and Sylvain were fantastic! Great film, great soundscape and great people.
This film really left a mark on me. The sound is so important to the impact “A Quiet Place” makes. Ethan and Erik are so creative with their approaches to this film. The have been on the podcast 2 times now and we hope they can come on again soon!
077 – Dangerous Field Recording
This episode was a bit of a happy accident, as we wanted to have both the Tonsturm guys and Colin Hart on as guests for a long time. When they both released sound libraries involving dangerous recording subjects around the same time, it suddenly made sense to have them on together! It worked out really well. They are all pretty funny too!
079 – Selling Sound Effects Roundtable
Another episode from our road trip to Montreal. This one was fun to record as we all gathered at Martin’s house, sat around his kitchen table, drank wine and had a great talk about the hard work that goes into releasing sound effects commercially. This episode also had a bonus download of almost 4 gig of sound effects donated to Tonebenders listeners from the great recordists on the panel.

Obviously using the metric of “most listened to” favours episodes that came out early in the year and benefited from a longer time to gather plays. This put episodes featuring Richard King, Soundgirls.org panel, and the team behind Dreaming of a Jewish Christmas at a clear disadvantage as they all came out in December.
We were lucky enough to have so many fantastic people take part in the podcast this past year. After all that I have not even mentioned the episode with Skip Lievsay!!!! He is one of my all time sound heroes. What about Peter Albrechtsen! Joseph Fraioli! Bret Johns! Nicholas Renbeck! The team at Foley One! So many great episode this past year!
Thanks for listening to our podcast in 2018. We have so many great episodes on the verge of coming out, so please stay with us in 2019, we have a feeling that it will be our best year yet….
