We welcome Tim Nielsen and Kai Paquin to talk about organizing & participating in Crowd Sourced Sound Effects Libraries. They have both run successful Crowd Sourced libraries that went on to raise lots of money for charities once completed. We also talk about the Universal Category System initiative, that Tim and Kai are the brains behind, and how it has helped streamline metadata in crowdsourced libraries.

Hi Tim and Rene, hope you’re both well. Just wanted to give a shout out to say, although the Sound Collectors’ Club has been inactive website-wise these past few years, the collection is still accessible for existing and new members. I’m planning to create much more content and activity again for the Club this year, so it was great to listen through to this podcast and learn about new practices, especially regarding metadata. I’ll definitely look into incorporating UCS into the Club contributions. Thanks for keeping Tonebenders going!
Hey Michael! Thanks for telling me this. I look forward to seeing/hearing the sound collectors club resurgence! When you are feeling like it is back up and running let us know. We would love to help spread the word.
Thanks Tim – A new theme has just gone live: http://thesoundcollectorsclub.com/2021/01/21/new-theme-bodyfalls/
Theme idea courtesy of Rene himself a few years back! 👍🏼
The UCS slack link has expired.
hey Aren, the Slack invites only stay valid for 30 days. Hopefully their homepage updates the invite link? https://universalcategorysystem.com
Hi Tim,
Is it possible to join the field recordist and UCS slack channels still?
Many thanks
Hello James, There is an invite for UCS on their homepage at https://universalcategorysystem.com as for the Field Recording Slack I think this should work:https://join.slack.com/t/fieldrecording/shared_invite/enQtNzgzMjM4OTk2NjQzLWJiMjNmNjllMWZhMDgwZjA0MzUyZTllMDI5Y2VlNzAwYmE1ZTA2Mjc2ZGNhMzRiYjNiZDFmNTA4MmNlNGQwYTQ. These links expire after a month or two though, hopefully this one still works.
Thanks Tim,
Unfortunately I couldn’t get the field recording link to work ;(
Maybe it has expired already?
