Mentorship

René, Tim and Teresa are going to start a virtual mentorship program for listeners of our podcast.

We are looking for listeners from underrepresented communities who are beginning their audio careers and are either in the late stages of college or university or have advanced learning in an alternate fashion.

For each 6 week period 1 applicant will be selected at random from a pre-qualified pool of applicants.  All applicants will be notified of the result, and those not selected are encouraged to re-apply for the next mentorship period.

During this 6 week program, there will be multiple one-on-one sessions with each of the three Tonebenders hosts.  You will have the opportunity for in-depth analysis and critique of your past projects, and we will go through our own work flows, philosophies and best practices.

We will also hand out assignments – including editing upcoming episodes of Tonebenders for release.  Opportunities will also arise to sit in on interviews and meet some of the amazing guests we have regularly on the podcast.

There is no fee to apply or participate.  Tonebenders is not charging for this, we will be doing this in our free time.

Here are some of the requirements needed in order to take part:

  • Access to a DAW (digital audio workstation). We are most familiar with ProTools, but any major DAW can work.  While Reaper is a good and low-cost DAW, keep in mind that Reaper’s workflows are specifically outside of our expertise.
  • A reliable internet connection.
  • A strong grasp of English.
  • Ability to be available during the daytime hours of the Eastern/Central timezones in North America.
  • Patience.  This is our first attempt at anything like this. We are going to be figuring this out as we go.  There will be bumpy moments.  We will be learning together what works and what doesn’t.
  • Adaptability. We will be fitting this in between our commitments to our jobs.  Those commitments may make re-scheduling necessary at times.

What you can expect from us:

  • 6 weeks of interaction with the Tonebenders team.  Each week will include a minimum of one hour of virtual face time with at least one of our hosts. During these meetings we will look at any past work you’d like reviewed and offer critique.  We will also offer run throughs of our workflows, session templates, tools used and best practices via screen sharing. There will also be ample time for any questions to be answered.  Questions can be about specifics of workflow or more broad career-level inquiries.
  • A minimum of 2 upcoming episodes of Tonebenders will be provided to be edited and mixed.  We will communicate the process and standards that are expected.  In-depth critique will be provided through the progress of these edits.  Once they meet our standards, the episodes will be released including a production credit read “on air” and an IMDB credit on your page.
  • The opportunity to sit in on interview recording sessions for upcoming Tonebenders episodes and to meet and interact with professionals in the industry.
  • The chance to pitch an idea for a future episode of Tonebenders and help make that idea come to life. Suggest possible guests, research relevant information and prepare questions.  If the episode works out an on-air credit of “producer” would be given.

If this seems like something you are interested in, please fill out the form below.

We will be accepting a single person for the initial 6 week run of this program.  Assuming things go well, we hope to make this a regular occurrence by running a mentorship program multiple times a year.  Each new mentorship period will require a new email entry.  Priority will be given to BIPOC (black, indigenous, and people of color) trans or non-binary, and women in this round, although all are welcome to apply.

Deadline for applications will be ————- .

Thanks!
